About Us
About the Program
The Pelham Skate School Learn to Skate program is designed to serve the needs of both recreational skaters and skaters on the path to becoming competitive skaters. The curriculum keeps participants enthusiastic about learning from the time they begin lessons! Whether you want to reach a specific goal or simply want to learn to skate for fun, we're the place for you to be!
Basic 5 and above are eligible to join our Aspire classes and begin the path to training like a competitive figure skater! We offer Specialty Classes such as Icemen, Off-Ice, and Dance classes as well! We also have Synchronized Skating Teams with offerings for skaters starting at Basic 2!
Want to play hockey? We can get you ready for that too. Once skaters complete Basic 4, they can register for Learn to Play. Prospective hockey players can also register for our Learn to Skate to Play Hockey class Little Toros held on Thursday nights! Visit the Pelham Hockey website for more on Little Toros and Learn to Play.
Pelham, Alabama is the home of the Pelham Skate School and Aspire Academy and Pelham Hockey. We are also home to the Birmingham Youth Hockey Travel Team and the Birmingham Figure Skating Club. The Skate School works in tandem with the Birmingham Figure Skating Club and are both dedicated to the development of figure skating by providing learn-to-skate opportunities and advanced training for competitive figure skating. Both are sanctioned members of United States Figure Skating (USFS). We also work in tandem with Pelham Hockey and Birmingham Youth Hockey and are dedicated to the development of hockey players at the recreational and advanced levels of travel hockey.
Please don't hesitate to contact our Director of Skating, Susie Gray via email with any questions about the Pelham Skate School or the Birmingham Figure Skating Club. For questions about hockey please contact our Director of Hockey, Josh Harris via email.
Helpful Information
Registering online prior to the session helps us to appropriately staff, prepare name badges and public session passes, and rosters for our instructors. Please make every effort to do so. We strongly encourage those interested in Learn to Skate to pre-register. We have class size limits in place so that our coaches can give the necessary attention to each group and student. If you register on the day of a lesson, you may be denied registration if a class has reached its maximum capacity. A $10 late fee will be added to registrations done on the day of class or later.
On the first day of Learn to Skate class, please arrive at least 30 minutes early to receive your class assignment in the Pro Shop, get fitted for skates at Skate Rental, and become familiar with the facility. After that, please arrive early enough to get skates on and participate in the 15-minute warm-up. Be sure to dress warmly, in layers that are flexible and comfortable. Don't forget your gloves! Helmets and knee pads are recommended for beginning skaters. Make sure your skates fit securely. Check laces! If you have any questions about skates, please ask our Pro Shop staff - managed by Ashley Deavers, a certified Skate Technician.
